With NSF and California Sea Grant support, we have teamed up with the Ocean Discovery Institute, a non-profit organization, to help bring science curriculum to under-served San Diego schools.
The challenge was to bring a hands-on experience to elementary school–
showing them how to use molecular biology to answer an interesting question.... in under 60 minutes!
With the help of electrophoresis instrumentation and supplies donated by Life Technologies Corp., students learned how to compare restriction digests of DNA samples on agarose gels. Species specific fragment patterns on the gel allow students to identify an unknown larval form to the matching adult form. Although a fast and simple exercise, students learn two major concepts:
